Zero Water Filter

Many of you might have Brita Water Pitchers or filters right on your faucet.  While that is better than water right out of the faucet there is a better filter out there we wanted you to know about and that's ZeroWater.

How is ZeroWater different?
  • It is a 5 stage filter which is more comprehensive
  • Ion Exchange Technology as opposed to simple carbon only
  • Removes virtually all detectable dissolved solids
How does the Zero Water filter work?
  • When water passes through the Ion Exchange Filters, the ions that you may not want in the water or may make the water taste bad are collected and exchanged with water ions like hydrogen.
Unfiltered water in our area has shown readings that range from 155-250.  Some of these reading come from after using a Brita filter as well.  So needless to say our water in the area is not good, which probably isn't a surprise to anyone.  Your water should have a reading of 000.  Once a reading reaches 006 or higher it's time to replace the filter.

How long will the filters last?
  • Though they are lab-certified for 22.5 gallons per filter under the strictest conditions, consumers with tap water near 200 TDS have said that one filter will treat about 30 gallons of water before seeing a reading of 006 on their TDS meter. The lower the TDS, the longer the filters will last. You need to test your water to know for yourself.

You can enter your zip code here to see if any readings have been posted for your area.

Natural Candy - Great idea for Easter!

Easter is right around the corner, and that means a lot of junk food!  On occasion we do like to indulge and have sugar.  So don't think we are 100% organic 100% of the time.  We try our best but we are not perfect.  Through some researching we came across www.naturalcandystore.com.  They carry candy that is made with no dyes or artificial colors, no preservatives, no artificial flavors, and no hydrogenated oils.  They even have dairy free options!  Check it out and consider buying this stuff, rather than the candy filled with all the EXTRA junk.  Happy Easter Everyone!!!

Berry Banana Cleanse Smoothie

We've heard some nice things about the blog lately and just wanted to say "Thank you!" to those who have been reading.  Just wanted to also mention to feel free to email us at any time with questions, thoughts, comments to trustyourgut13@gmail.com.  We are working on getting some new things together as well so bare with us if we don't post daily over the next couple of weeks.  In the meantime I wanted to share what I'm having for breakfast and lunch today.

Berry Banana Cleanse Smoothie
  • 1 rib of celery
  • 1 frozen banana (or fresh)
  • 1/4 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1 cup of kale
  • 1-2 cups of coconut water or water (I used regular water)
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds *optional

Berry Banana Cleanse Smoothie
I drink the smoothie on my way into work and then mid morning I like to have a snack usually consisting of some raw veggies.  Today I'll be having carrots with a little peanut butter.  Carrots are probably my least favorite vegetable so while I try to eat them plain sometimes I need a little something extra, hence the peanut butter.

Last night I made Spaghetti Squash Spaghetti for supper and it was delicious!  So my lunch today will consist of some spaghetti squash spaghetti leftovers and for my afternoon snack an avocado, that is if I'm hungry then.  I always like to bring an extra snack along in case I get hungry later in the day.  That way I won't go running to the vending machine and end up grabbing a bag of chips because my stomach is screaming at me.  I tend to make poor decisions when I'm at that stage of hunger!
Spaghetti Squash Spaghetti

Breakfast, lunch & snacks for the day
It always helps me to see what healthy meals/snacks others are eating so I hope this gives you some ideas.  Have a great day!

Skip the Soy

Skip the Soy  (Alternative Solutions' Newsletter)

With trendy marketing tactics and endless options, the soy industry has become worth hundreds of millions of dollars. John Pi, owner of the Soy Luck Club in New York City which features all things made of soy explains his inspiration: "Look at the soy section in the supermarket. It's almost as big as the dairy department." For a long time tofu was the best known human food made from soy, but now there are plenty of options to choose from that are soy based. These options are trendy and marketed as "healthier" for you. Why has soy become so popular? Are there underlying truths behind the soy market of which consumers are not aware? Let’s take a look.

More than 10,000 soybean varieties have been discovered by US researchers. Aside from food, soybeans are vital to the production of livestock feed, industrial oils, infant formula, soaps, and other household objects. In 1935, Henry Ford was building automobiles out of plastic made from soybeans. Even the automobile’s exterior! It wasn't until the 1940's that soybean farming really took off in America. The United States started producing it for China whose soybean fields were devastated by World War II. Currently the United States produces more soybean bushels than any other country at 32%.

You might think, “What about the Asian diet which promotes soy?” Despite common beliefs, soy is not the main source of protein in the Asian diet. While they do consume small quantities of fermented soy such as miso and tempeh, the average diet only totals about 10 grams soy protein each day. They also pair soy with animal proteins such as fish broth which make it more digestible. American soy manufacturers recommend amounts 10 times higher at 100 grams daily.

American livestock currently consume about 25 million tons of soybean meal each year. No other high protein animal feed comes close. This boom in the use of soybean meal for livestock feed began in the 1950's and has been on the rise since.

You might consume large amounts of soy daily without even realizing it. Did you know that almost 80% of the oil Americans eat is soy? Soybean oil is found in hundreds of processed foods and has replaced real fats such as butter, milk, meat, and fish in the standard American diet.

Soy oil is produced with immense heat and pressure. Oils tend to go rancid or spoiled when they are heat treated. Olive oil is “cold pressed” to prevent this damage. For soy however, the heat is not enough to finish extraction. Factories must treat the pulp with hexane, a chemical solvent, in order to extract the last bit of soy oil from the pulp. To help with preservation and to make it solid at room temperature, liquid soy oil may be further processed by blasting it with hydrogen and mixing with tiny nickel oxide particles in a process known as "hydrogenation".

If you look on the ingredient list of many foods, especially processed foods in the aisles of the supermarket, you will see ingredients such as "soy lecithin” and “isolated soy protein". Soy lecithin is an additive to many foods and also has purposes in the industrial field because it overcomes the natural repulsion between oil and water to keep mixtures from separating too quickly. Popularly used in cooking sprays, soy lecithin keeps your baked goods from sticking to the pan.

The drawback? Soy lecithin has known effects on reproductive abnormalities and sexual dysfunction. Containing the compound phytoestrogen, it produces similar effects on the body as estrogen. One study reported by Cornell University examined 28 women receiving soy supplements for six months. The women were found to have an increased growth of milk ducts in their breasts, which are a leading forerunner of cancer according to the Program on Breast Cancer and Environmental Risk Factors in New York State.

Soy protein isolate is an ingredient used in meat and dairy imitators. It’s used extensively in school lunch programs, commercial baked goods, diet beverages and fast food products. The results of soy protein are not wholesome. Soy protein processing produces the natural form of monosodium glutamate (MSG).

The claim on soy protein isolate, states that it is 90%-95% protein based and nearly carbohydrate and fat free. However, when compared to whole egg and egg white, soy has a much lower amount of protein deposited per gram of protein absorbed. With low nitrogen retention, optimal muscle growth will not be achieved. Soy protein isolate contains certain anti-nutrients, like trypsin, that may cause the body to experience delay in digesting food and in effect, a delay in absorbing nutrients. This in time can lead to chronic nutrient deficiencies.

In men, soy protein has shown to reduce testosterone levels and lower sperm count. New York University's Langone Medical School recommends that "men who struggle with problems related to lowered testosterone, such as a decreased libido, should avoid consuming soy supplements and soy foods."
In the United States, about 25 percent of formula-fed babies receive soy-based formula. Soy-based formulas contain high levels of phytoestrogens like genistein. Genistein mimics that action of estrogen and it’s been shown that "genistein levels measured in the blood of soy-fed infants are roughly 10 times higher than phytoestrogen concentrations known to alter a woman’s menstrual cycle."  Some of these changes can persist into adulthood.

Goitrogens are another problematic component of soy. Goitrogens are substances that block the synthesis of thyroid hormones and interfere with iodine metabolism, thereby interfering with your thyroid function.

Vegetarians who consume tofu and bean curd as a substitute for meat and dairy products risk severe mineral deficiencies. The results of calcium, magnesium and iron deficiency are well known.
Protein Options For Vegetarians: Beans, Nuts, Seeds, Sprouts, Quinoa, Cashew/Almond Butter, Flaxseed, Pea Powder, Rice Powder

However, a lack of vitamins and minerals doesn’t just occur in vegetarians. You cannot rely on the media to give accurate and non-biased knowledge. The fact is soy is one of the most highly processed foods on the market. Just because a food is "low in cholesterol" or "high in protein", doesn’t make it "healthy".

Do the research if you are not sure about the different views of marketed "health foods". Get advice from a trained health care professional. Knowing exactly what your body needs can be assessed by a comprehensive blood analysis and hair tissue mineral test. These objective testing methods can lead you down the right path towards optimal wellness

Spaghetti Squash Spaghetti - Gluten free!

This is a great gluten free recipe that can be made in big portions for dinner or lunches for the week. Even if your not a big squash fan try this recipe at least once. You will be surprised at how good it is!

Ingredients:

1 spaghetti squash (small one feeds 2)
1 jar of organic spaghetti sauce (you can also make your own)
1 lb of hamburger

Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 375.
Cut the spaghetti squash in half and scoop out all of the seeds and meat with a spoon. Place the halves with the open side down in a baking pan with water that covers the bottom of the pan. Place in oven and set timer for 45 minutes. (If using a larger squash I would set the timer for 1 hour.)

Brown your hamburger in a skillet, drain and add sauce and burger into a big pot. Let the mix simmer until the squash is finished.

Once the spaghetti squash has finished cooking, take out of the oven and let it sit 5 minutes. It will be hot! Once cooled, use a fork to pull the noodles from the skin. There is no special technique just start scraping!

Mix the squash noodles in with the sauce and you are done! (See pictures below)

cut the squash in half

scoop out the seeds and meat

place squash into baking pan with water

Peppers and mushrooms were sautéed in coconut oil and then added to the sauce for more flavor
use fork to remove squash noodles

Sauce that was used (bought at Dierberg's in Shiloh)

Dinner is served!

Natural Easter Egg Dyes

With Easter right around the corner we thought we'd share this post from 100 Days of Real Food discussing natural Easter egg dyes.  It's simple and safe so you'll feel much better knowing your kids are consuming dye free eggs!

Here's how you do it:

1. Hard-boil a bunch of eggs. Doesn’t matter if they’re white or pastel or brown. Each one lends itself to great color variations. (But choose local, pastured eggs if you can. Check out Local Harvest for why that’s important and where you can find good eggs near you.)

2. On your stove, set out four pots* with two cups of water each.

3. To one pot, add a hefty teaspoon of turmeric powder (that’s your yellow). To another, add a couple handfuls of chopped red beets, either fresh or jarred (that’s pink). To a third, add two cups of frozen blueberries or blackberries (your blue). Bring the pots to boiling, then let them simmer five minutes.

4. For the fourth pot, boil the water separately, then turn off the heat and add the contents of six chlorophyll capsules, which can be found in natural-foods stores (that’s your green). Chlorophyll capsules are available at Alternative Solutions in Aviston.

5. After everything has cooled, strain out the chunky bits, then add a teaspoon of vinegar to each the beets (pink) and berries (blue).

6. Dunk eggs. Maybe mark them with crayons for fun designs. Keep dunking and cross-dunking and letting them soak a bit until you get colors you like. Be happy.

*If you don’t have four pots, use a teapot to boil the water for the chlorophyll capsules. That one doesn’t need to simmer, so you can easily pour out two cups of water and mix the green in a separate bowl.

Let us know how it goes!  Email us pics of your Easter egg dyeing activities!

13 Banned Foods Still Allowed in the US (Part 2)

We provided an article last week on 13 food ingredients that are banned in other countries but are still used by the U.S.  We came across another article, "American Foods Chockfull of Ingredients Banned in Other Countries," from Dr. Mercola that provides a table of the top offenders to avoid, what they are found in and what the health hazards are.  It's definitely worth a read.  Did you know that our food industry already makes safer, better products for other countries who have banned these ingredients...what's with the double-standard??   And recently Russia no longer allows US meat imports due to the discovery the meat contains ractopamine - a beta agonist drug that increases protein synthesis, making the animal more muscular and reducing the fat content of the meat.  This drug is banned in 160 countries, including China and Russia but the US continues to use it.  Just another example to be mindful of what's in the food in your grocery cart.  Read the labels!

A Tip for Snacking and Eating Healthy

To make easy grab and go snacks or sides for lunch, make sure you clean and cut your veggies and fruit after shopping.  It is also cheaper to buy veggies and fruit not already cut and packaged.  Finding ways to save money is always a plus!

If you start your kids out early on raw vegetables you'll be surprised how much they will like!  And for those with older kids try a side of hummus.  It's much healthier than sour cream based dips.

Kids Multi

Available at
Alternative Solutions
in Aviston
We all know getting our kids to eat veggies is not the easiest task so one way to make sure they are getting all the fruits and veggies they need is by using a multivitamin.

Kids Natural Calm Multi is Organic, Gluten-Free & GMO-Free.  You simply mix it with equal parts water.  It provides the following:
  •  24 Organic Fruits & Veggies - made from superfruits (organic pomegranate, acai, goji and noni), fruits (apple, banana, blackberry, blueberry, cranberry, mango, orange, pineapple, raspberry, strawberry and tart cherry) and vegetables (beets, broccoli, carrot, collard greens, kale, peas, pumpkin, spinach and tomato).
  • Omega-3 DHA & EPA - integral parts of cell membranes and precursors for several important cellular messengers.
  • Vitamins and Minerals
  • Natural Calm Magnesium
  • Calcium
  • Amino Acids
Calcium and Magnesium are key nutrients that need to be in balance with each other in order for good health to be fully maintained.  Calcium excites nerves, while magnesium calms them down.  Calcium makes muscles contract.  Magnesium is necessary for muscles to relax.  You experience the tensing (calcium) and relaxing (magnesium) interaction of these two elements each time your heart beats, when you feel your pulse, and every time you breathe.

When we are under stress (and don’t think that stress applies only to adults), our cells-which in their resting state contain magnesium-go through a change.  Calcium, normally outside the cells, enters the cells and the calcium level becomes high. This is the action state in which a muscle cell, for example, will contract and tense the muscle. The magnesium then pushes the calcium out of the cell and the cell is again in its resting, relaxed state.

Think of it as an on-off switch. The “off ” is magnesium and the “on” is calcium.  But what happens to a cell that is not in balance-where the magnesium level in the body is deficient?
In simple terms, the “off ” switch doesn’t fully turn off.  That means calcium can continually leak into the cells and stimulate cell activity (the “on” switch). The result is stress, which may be accompanied by one or more of the magnesium deficiency symptoms.

Symptoms of Magnesium Depletion:
  • Stress
  • Fatigue & Low Energy
  • Inability to Sleep
  • Muscle Tension, Spasms & Cramps
  • Anxiousness and Nervousness
  • Irritability
  • Headaches
  • Weakness
  • Weakening Bones
  • Abnormal Heart Rhythm

Magnesium helps your child’s muscles and nerves function properly; it keeps heart rhythm steady, supports a healthy immune system and also assists in keeping bones strong. This essential mineral helps regulate blood sugar levels, promotes normal blood pressure and is required for producing and storing energy. It’s easy to see why many researchers say that no single dietary factor is as critical as magnesium.

Fruit Juice...Soda's Evil Twin?

How many of you give your children juice on a daily basis...and even more, several cups a day?  If you said Yes, would you consider giving your children a soda a day?  Society has led us to believe that because the word fruit is on the label it must be good and good for you.  However, most fruit drinks given to kids are pure sugar-water and contain next to no real juice.  Have you ever really looked at the label and saw how many grams of sugar are in that juice. Or noticed that it's loaded with high-fructose corn syrup.  The only true healthy juices are those that are freshly squeezed.  So we ask you, are fruit drinks really healthier than soda or are they really Soda's Evil Twin.  Most of us at Trust your gut! are mothers so we understand the dilemma.  But a much healthier, less expensive choice is water.  I say less expensive because you need a good filtration system, but what's more convenient than a drink that comes right out of your faucet.  Our bodies crave water for hydration so it only makes sense that we make sure our kids are drinking plenty of water too.  You are not depriving your children by refusing to give them sugary drinks all day, you're helping to keep them healthy and what's more important than that!  Stay tuned for a post regarding water filters.

1 Tbsp of coconut oil
2 Heaping handfuls of kale

Debunking The Milk Myth

Personal Health Solutions Health Coach, Collin, sent us this great article from saveourbones.com titled, "Debunking The Milk Myth: Why Milk Is Bad For You And Your Bones."  The key points of this article are as follows:
  • Milk depletes the calcium from your bones: "Like all animal protein, milk acidifies the body pH which in turn triggers a biological correction. You see, calcium is an excellent acid neutralizer and the biggest storage of calcium in the body is – you guessed it… in the bones. So the very same calcium that our bones need to stay strong is utilized to neutralize the acidifying effect of milk. Once calcium is pulled out of the bones, it leaves the body via the urine, so that the surprising net result after this is an actual calcium deficit."
  • Cow’s milk is custom-designed for calves: "each mammalian species has its own “designer” milk, and cow’s milk is no exception. For example, cow’s milk contains on average three times the amount of protein than human milk which creates metabolic disturbances in humans that have detrimental bone health consequences."
  • Scientific studies show that milk increases fracture risk: "the 12 year long Harvard Nurses’ Health Study found that those who consumed the most calcium from dairy foods broke more bones than those who rarely drank milk. This is a broad study based on 77,761 women aged 34 through 59 years of age."
  • Shocking statistics ignored by mainstream medicine: "The countries with the highest rates of osteoporosis are the ones where people drink the most milk and have the most calcium in their diets. The connection between calcium consumption and bone health is actually very weak, and the connection between dairy consumption and bone health is almost nonexistent."
  • Milk is an acidifying animal protein: "The body is designed for survival, so it sacrifices bone density to protect the kidneys and urinary tract because the latter are essential to survival. And the most readily available source of acid neutralizer is in the bones. So even though milk contains calcium, it ends up sapping your bones of that crucial mineral."
  • Today’s milk is a processed food: "Nowadays, milking cows are given antibiotics and most are also injected with a genetically engineered form of bovine growth hormone (rBGH). A man-made or synthetic hormone used to artificially increase milk production, rBGH also increases blood levels of the insulin-growth factor 1 (IGF-1) in those who drink it. And higher levels of IGF-1 are linked to several cancers."
  • Avoid drinking cow’s milk: "contrary to mainstream recommendations, drinking milk and eating lots of dairy products are not the answer to reversing osteoporosis"
  • The best milk substitutes:"My favorite milk substitute is unsweetened almond milk, not only because it is alkalizing (as almonds are), but also because it’s delicious and tastes very similar to milk. I even cook with it! If almond milk is hard to get, you can also try rice or coconut milk."
Almond milk is a great substitute.  Contrary to what most pediatricians will tell you, your children do not need cow's milk to grow big and strong.  You can see a great comparison of cows milk to almond milk in this article from Total Mommy Fitness. Don't just take our word for it though.  Do your own research and decide then what's best for you.

Coconut Oil.. Use it, Lots of it!

coconut-oil
Available at Alternative Solutions
 in Aviston

Coconut oil is a superfood that you should be using daily! Olive oil is still amazing but did you know that it turns rancid and causes inflammation and damage to the body once it's heated. So olive oil is great for putting on salads or whole grains for flavor but when sautéing or frying coconut oil is a must! This oil is not affected by heat and has many more health benefits.

  • Naturally fights off viruses, bacteria, and fungal overgrowth
  • Improved digestion and absorption of fat soluble vitamins and amino acids
  • Regulates blood sugar - relieves symptoms of hypoglycemia
  • It's a powerful antioxidant
  • Improves absorption of calcium and magnesium

USES:

  • Add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil to your smoothie for a boost of good fatty acids and to keep you feeling full longer.
  • Replace vegetable oil or any other oil when baking 1 to 1 for a healthier option.
  • Use for sautéing vegetables, frying eggs or when roasting vegetables.
  • Apply to skin as you would body lotion. Rubs in quickly will rehydrate better than any lotion.
  • Use as shaving cream
  • Apply to brittle dry hair to replenish shine and body. Massage into your scalp, leave it in for 20 minutes and then shampoo.
  • Have an earache... Warm slightly and then pour oil into your ear. You can do this multiple times throughout the day until symptoms relieve.
SIDE NOTE:

When purchasing coconut oil you want to buy unrefined coconut oil. Most stores are selling refined coconut oil so read the label!
